Where can I find a Beginners guide to Electronics & Engineering?

I’m hopefully starting an apprenticeship in Electronic Engineering and would like to know where I can find some sort of beginners guide to electrics and engineering in general, in the form of a book. Prefferably a UK version.

I have thought about Ebooks but I really think having the hard copy of a book would be more useful.

The Art of Electronics by Horowitz and Hill. Best basic electronics textbook ever. Unfortunately they wrote it before the PAL/CPLD/FPGA era, but the basics are still the basics, because they’re so basic.
